Thomas Baxter 1782-1821. Probably the greatest ceramic painter of his time. Born in Worcester he worked at his father’s decorating studios in London painting white porcelain mainly from Coalport. He studied painting at the Royal Academy under Henry Fuseli. He became friendly with Admiral Nelson and Lady Hamilton at Merton and painted her in a series of poses. In 1814 Baxter moved to Worcester and worked for Flight, Barr and Barr from 1814-1816 teaching many painters. In 1816 he moved to Swansea where he worked for Dillwyn. Returned to Worcester in 1819 painting for Flight and Barr and then Chamberlain. Exhibited at the Royal Academy 16 times between 1802 and 1821.
