Volunteers make an enormous difference to every aspect of our work, with time, support and expertise. This greatly enhances what we can achieve, as an independent charity without regular public funding.

Volunteer at the museum

There are a lots of different ways that you can volunteer with us, from a few regular hours a week or month, or  flexibly to support with events, as and when.

Right now, we’re open 5 days a week, Wednesday to Sunday and need help in our very popular Paint Your Own Pottery studio, with events and groups visits, and on our ‘Pop Up Museum’.

Find out about the kind of things you can get involved in below. We are a small, friendly and supportive team that enjoys our stunning setting.

Paint Your Own Pottery volunteers

We opened our ceramic studio three years ago and it has quickly grown to be popular with groups of adults, families and for Paint-Your-Own-Pottery parties.

Examples of tasks:

  • welcome visitors, give out painting materials, explain choice of bisque and how to get started with painting their unique design
  • support behind-the-scenes to refill paint and wash brushes, wrap items and let customers know they  are ready for collection
  • over time, we can train you to glaze and pack ceramic items in the kiln ready for firing

Useful skills and experience:

  • talking to people of all ages
  • supporting events or group activities
  • interest in arts and craft

events and pop-up museum

Groups visits, often with a talk or tour and refreshments served on Royal Worcester, are increasingly popular. We also have a Pop-up Museum gazebo with creative heritage activities, that we take out and about to city events, such as the Worcester Show and Countrytastic at the Three Counties Showground.

Examples of tasks:

  • helping set up and serve refreshments for group visits, events, open days, sometimes with tea-tasting
  • helping prepare materials and support creative activities for children, families, adults, and groups eg. clay modelling, collage/design-a-plate activities or pottery painting
  • welcoming and chatting to visitors about our handling collection
  • recording visitor numbers and surveys

We also have other hands-on opportunities to help us set up and put away furniture for events and to support transport and set-up of our Pop-up Museum at locations around Worcester. There are gardening and maintenance tasks that help keep the Museum looking our best. Help is always welcome with administration and marketing such as social media, updating our website or delivering flyers.

Our Museum Director, says:

‘We are a small friendly team of staff and volunteers who are passionate about Worcester porcelain and connecting people with this magnificent heritage. Volunteering with us offers opportunities to meet new people, share your expertise and learn new skills. We have roles for regular or occasional volunteering, to suit a range of interests and commitments.’
